They are ready to stitch as soon as you open the package, and when your stitching in finished a short soak and rinse in warm water will wash the printed completely away. This is a good beginner kit, or a relaxing small take along stitching project with everything you need except scissors (for travelling I just use my nail clippers to cut threads,
